Vang Vieng in September and October: What Actually Runs

What we actually run in Vang Vieng in September and October: trekking, climbing, river days, enduro and the lake, plus what the weather does.

Almost everything runs in Vang Vieng in September and October. We guide treks, rock climbing, river days, enduro rides and lake cruises right through the end of green season, and the only trips that move around are the ones that depend on clear morning air, like the balloon. What changes is not whether you can do things, it is the light, the colour of the valley and how many other people are standing in it. This is what our own September and October look like, checked on 10 September 2026.

Is September or October a bad time to visit Vang Vieng?

No, and we would say the opposite for anyone who cares more about scenery than about a guaranteed dry afternoon. September and October sit at the tail of green season, which runs roughly from May to October. The rice is in, the hills are properly green rather than the dusty brown you get in March, the waterfalls have water in them, and the karst towers spend half the day wrapped in moving cloud.

The trade is that you cannot plan a rigid itinerary. You plan a shape for the day and stay flexible about the order. That is how we run our own guiding in these two months.

What does the weather actually do?

Green season rain in this part of Laos usually arrives in short heavy bursts rather than as all day drizzle. Mornings are often the clearest part of the day and the rain, when it comes, tends to land in the afternoon or overnight. It is not a rule and we have had grey mornings and blue afternoons, but it is the pattern we schedule around.

Temperatures are far kinder than the pre monsoon heat. You are trekking in humidity rather than in the 38 to 40 degree furnace of April, which most people find easier once they stop expecting to stay dry.

October is the turn. The rain thins out through the month and by the end of it the valley usually feels like the start of the dry season, still green but with steadier skies. If you want the green landscape with the better odds on weather, late October is the sweet spot. For the full month by month picture across the country, we wrote a separate guide to the best time to visit Laos.

Which activities do we actually run in September and October?

Trekking

Trekking is the strongest thing to do in these months and it is the one we push hardest. The Lost Valley is at its greenest, the streams are running, and the whole landscape looks like the photographs people came here for.

Our Discovery Trek is a short guided walk built for families and for anyone who wants the valley without a full day on their feet, at $35 per person on the group rate or $70 as a private walk with a guide. The full day Lost Valley Summit is $50 per person in a group and $100 private, and the two day overnight expedition is $125 per person or $250 private.

Wear something with grip. The ground holds water in green season and the trail is slower than the same trail in January, which is worth knowing before you pick between the half day and the full day. Our Lost Valley trekking guide breaks down the difference in detail.

Rock climbing

Climbing runs as normal in these months, at whatever time of day suits you. We work with Adam's Climbing School on the limestone just outside town, and green season does not change the schedule.

A half day session is $45 and a full day is $85, both fine for complete beginners. If you have never touched rock before, we wrote about what a first climb here is actually like.

The river

The Nam Song is fuller and faster in green season than it is in the dry months, which changes the character of a kayak day rather than cancelling it. It is a livelier paddle and a shorter one for the same distance. We check the river on the day and match the trip to what it is doing. Our Nam Song kayaking and tubing guide covers the sections and what to expect.

Nam Ngum Lake

The lake is one of the quiet wins of green season. The reservoir is high, the surrounding hills are green to the waterline, and the sunset cruise is a comfortable option on a day when you do not feel like walking uphill. The Nam Ngum sunset cruise is $45 with transfer from Vang Vieng.

Enduro

We ride through green season the same as any other time of year, and the hills around Vang Vieng are at their best to look at in these two months. Everything we run is on the tours page.

Hot air balloon

The balloon is the one activity we will not promise you. It needs calm, clear morning air, and green season mornings do not always deliver it. Flights go when conditions allow and get moved when they do not. If a balloon flight is the thing you came for, give yourself several mornings in Vang Vieng rather than one, and read our balloon experience guide first. Flights start from $149.

How should you plan the day?

Front load it. Book the trekking for the morning, keep the afternoon for the river, the lake, a cave or a long lunch, and treat anything after four o'clock as a bonus. Two full days in Vang Vieng with that shape will get you more than three days planned rigidly.

A few practical things:

Is it quieter and cheaper?

Quieter, yes, noticeably. September and October are outside the November to February peak, and viewpoints and trails that queue in December are close to empty. If your reason for coming is the landscape rather than the nightlife, this is the version of Vang Vieng most people say they wanted.

Cheaper depends on what you are buying. Accommodation softens outside high season. Our own tour prices do not change with the season, so what you see above is what you pay in September as much as in January.

So should you book?

Come, and come with the right expectations. September and October give you the greenest valley of the year, real space on the trails, and full days of guiding on everything except the balloon. Bring a rain layer, start early, and let us move the plan around the weather rather than fighting it.

If you are still deciding what to do with your days, the trek page and the rock climbing page are the two we would look at first for this time of year.
